“India vs. China: Who Will Win The Luxury Race?”
    Oh yes, a crucial question.

  • Yes, it is always a bit humorous when China and India are compared on anything but the size of their populations. Equally funny is when they talk about the developing world holding up a decision on climate talks.

  • Thanks for reading! Alan, it’s a crucial question for luxury brand execs deciding which market has the most long-term potential, and which to pump more resources into.

Expansion of luxury goods markets in a particular country or region is one of those sociological markers of either social mobility. As the market expands – even with LV knock-offs -
it indicates a greater flow of goods and expanded economic ability. Of course it is also a mark of an economy that is still so uncertain of its own cultural footing that it latches indiscriminately on to what it sees as the symbol of success elsewhere.

Indications are that in China’s coastal centers, a level of discrimination in taste and a respect for nurturing local luxury goods identity is emerging.

When and if LV luggage comes to Falluja or Kandahar, you can bet a different socio-economic environment is emerging there too.
