A Plus Student

Former Hang on the Box frontwoman Gia (Wang Yue) is working on a tee-shirt brand called Bad Taste (more from the Global Times).

She was at the launch of Lane Crawford and Modern Weekly‘s ‘A Plus’ exhibition, which features collaborations between China’s fashion designers and international artists.

A Real Dashilar Resident

“Real” only in the sense that she actually lives there now.  This young lady who goes by the name Moon-D on Weibo is neither a typical nor a long-term resident of Dashilar.  Only in Beijing for about two years, she moved into the historic neighborhood a few months ago, attracted by the central location, vert low rent (around USD 100 a month – though her place lacks a private bathroom and kitchen), and attractive environment.  Part of a rock band, she describes herself as one of the few “artsy” people living in the area.  She also says Design Week was probably the first hip, cultural event to take place there.

Izzue FW 2011 in 789

Izzue‘s Fall/Winter 2011 fashion show that was held this friday in 798 started with a great soundtrack and ended with a bang. Beijing’s local Indie stars Queen Sea Big Shark played a rocking set that had all the hipsters dancing or a at least tapping their feet.

New Blazers

Outside of the Ullens Center were New Pants singer Millionaire Peng (Peng Lei) and his new fiance who actually interviewed me for a magazine about three years ago.

Firepower

Here is Gia walking out of the Bazaar Men’s Style awards event.  She must have been unimpressed by the results.

Super VC for Hermès果味VC在爱马仕

After seeing Super VC at nearly every party, I finally got to see them perform at Hermès’ J’aime mon Carre event.  I guess Hermès did a good job pitching their brand to younger buyers through this campaign. Bassist Zhen Yang (left) has been on Stylites many times.

Fur Hat Season

It is upon us.  It’s nice to see that more Beijingers are finding hats to be stylish these days.  In the past, the spectacle of people in giant, grotesque, puffer coats going hatless was always amusing.

Gia Descending

Hang on the Box’s Gia was part of the diverse crowd out for the 3.1 Phillip Lim party at Lane Crawford.

Pang Kuan Smashing an Apple Monitor

If the Creators Project had a climax, for me it was the smashing of an Apple monitor by Pang Kuan (庞宽), keyboardist and singer for New Pants, at the climax of the song “‘Sex, Drugs, Internet”.  Judging by the visuals on the LED behind, the smashing had something to do with anger related to sex and the internet, but it seemed an ironic act at a project showcasing the meeting of design and technology.  Though I like the music, the visuals were the main highlight of the show for me.

Gia at Artinfo

Stylites veteran Gia is singled out as a key fashion influence by artinfo.  She does do a good job representing the style of iconoclastic ladies in her generation and younger ones.  Look here for Stylites’ interview with her.

Zeitgeist, Male

To me this seems like a highly representative look for this particular moment in time, here in Beijing.

Retro’s Spokewoman

Peipei and boyfriend Pang Kuan (the keyboardist for New Pants) own the shop on Nanluoguxiang called Bye Bye Disco and just opened a bar right off the street by the same name.  They are actually having a series of after-parties there this weekend.  I spoke with Pei Pei about her retro, the Nanluoguxiang area and other subjects.

NF: What are some of the changes you have seen recently in how young people dress?

Reverse Rustication

Rustic is a big band at the moment.  They won the top title in the Global Battle of the Bands for China, just held in Hong Kong.

This is Ricky, the bassist.  He is from Shijiazhuang, Hebei.  Just before he took this photo, Ricky was pissing on the hutong wall.  He was on his way to getting a tattoo of his girlfriend’s face put on his back.  He describes her as “rich”.  He himself lives with four others in a flat in Tongzhou, where each roommate pays RMB 400.
