Gia at Artinfo

Stylites veteran Gia is singled out as a key fashion influence by artinfo. She does do a good job representing the style of iconoclastic ladies in her generation and younger ones. Look here for Stylites’ interview with her.

Retro’s Spokewoman 复古的代言人

Peipei and boyfriend Pang Kuan (the keyboardist for New Pants) own the shop on Nanluoguxiang called Bye Bye Disco and just opened a bar right off the street by the same name. They are actually having a series of after-parties there this weekend. I spoke with Pei Pei about her retro, the Nanluoguxiang area and other subjects.

NF: What are some of the changes you have seen recently in how young people dress?

孙配配跟男朋友庞宽(新裤子的钢琴家)开了一个小店在南锣鼓巷叫Bye Bye Disco。他们这个周末会开些party。我最近采访了她。

NF:看到哪些变化在年轻人穿着?

Reverse Rustication

Rustic is a big band at the moment. They won the top title in the Global Battle of the Bands for China, just held in Hong Kong.

This is Ricky, the bassist. He is from Shijiazhuang, Hebei. Just before he took this photo, Ricky was pissing on the hutong wall. He was on his way to getting a tattoo of his girlfriend’s face put on his back. He describes her as “rich”. He himself lives with four others in a flat in Tongzhou, where each roommate pays RMB 400.

Only the Lonely

Milk@Coffee lead singer Kiki, last mentioned here for designing a dress, is very accomplished. She has come out with several albums and now even a book about herself. Her style of music is rather cheerful and poppy, but seems to deal with the subjects of loneliness and being by herself – one of her biggest hits is called “Accustomed to Loneliness”. Something about her that doesn’t meet the eye must be repelling everyone.

Bye Bye Disco

pei pei-2

From a small town in Yunnan, Peipei runs Bye Bye Disco, one of the most notable shops on Nanluoguxiang, with boyfriend Pang Kuan, a member of disco-punk hybrid act New Pants. More on Bye Bye Disco on the website of That’s Beijing, a magazine that is now defunct. This place is beloved of foreigners, who come for the iconic Feiyue sneakers (available all the way up to size 47 at Bye Bye Disco). Feiyue is so hip these days that there is even a blog.

Boyz at Vogue Night Out

xander

Xander Zhou (周翔宇) was one of a huge crowd of celebrities attending fashion for Anna Wintour’s Fashion’s Night Out. All eyes have been on this young fashion designer since he guest edited the August “Gay China” issue of media sorceress Hong Huang’s (洪晃) fashion magazine “ILOOK” (more at Gayographic and China Hush). Though there have been many smaller gay-friendly publications opening and closing over the last decade, this was the first time a mainstream magazine made nature’s bachelors and their role in fashion the focus of an issue. I met Xander last at a fabric store in Muxiyuan.

Also at the Vogue party in the basement of the World Trade Center was Beijing brit-rock band Super VC (at a Burberry event). There were huge crowds and droves of celebrities making more stylites photos during the after-party up at Aria difficult.

Jin Haixin, Adorable

I didn’t realize this when photographing her but lovely Jin Haixin is a well-known pop singer. She is a Chinese of Korean ethnicity and has been popular since 1999.

The dress is Donna Karan the glasses vintage.

Compared to other more arrogant celebrities I have encountered, she was very sweet, not becoming irritated by my annoying questions (“where do you perform?” “do you have a band?”). You can sample her tunes on baidu.
