I have just arrived and am trying to get adjusted to the time difference, extreme humidity, and smog. It is nice to return to return to my little courtyard though. Jeffrey Ying just got in and is crashing on my couch for the moment.

These hutongs are making her feel brand new. And being somebody in the China City is almost as good as being somebody in the World City. Sylvia is just in from Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi province, and is planning to live here permanently perhaps working in a magazine.

Beijing Girls
So pretty, they could easily be as attractive as the NYC ones if they only dressed a little better, but the looks that hit me the moment I exit the plane run the gambit from mediocre to heinous.

Beijing Retail Sales up 15.7% in 2009
Was anyone doubting that China would pull the world out of the Recession? In Beijing, retail sales in consumer goods reached 531 billion yuan (USD 77.8 billion) in 2009, up 15.7 percent from the year before, according to China Daily. Judging by this People’s Daily piece, Beijing’s performance was merely average, compared with the rest of the country. Interestingly, Forbes ranked Beijing 15th on its list of global shopping capitals in 2009 – Shanghai did not make the list. This ranking reflects the brisk growth in the number of global retailers present in the city. The number of H&Ms and Zaras in the capital is set to grow further in 2010, with others such as Gap expected.
Back to Beijing!
I just arrived back in Beijing and regular updates on Stylites will start soon. Sorry for the interruption. I was back in the States for my father’s 90th birthday.
Beijing’s Modern Dandy
I had been meaning to put this one up for a while. Li Mengxia (æŽåŸå¤) is one of the most well-known and admired figures on the Beijing magazine publishing scene. He has worked in numerous capacities as a creative director, art director, and editor. I don’t have time for fact checking right now, so I won’t mention each of his various positions. He has been associated with Modern Media (çŽ°ä»£ä¼ æ’) for quite a few years. One of his position was heading up the City Life section of Modern Weekly (《周末画报》城市版), to which I contribute a weekly column based on this blog.
Quite an interesting detail on his wool tie, which was purchased at Lane Crawford. The peacock feather type ornament on his lapel was what all VIPs received at the event that night.
Snow Falls on Central Beijing
The snow was falling hard, preventing much venturing out today, but I found this stylish individual right around the corner from my place.
This is the first time I have seen such snow in all the years that I have been here.
Landing in Beijing Saturday
Regular updates will begin again.
The US has been fun.
Not ’80s Beijing
These two graphic/image design students stepped directly from the 80s, but in completely different styles.

A Sartorial Model for Beijing Men
Born in Beijing, George headed to the States at 13, but still believes the East is the best. He is back in Beijing to bring his family business to new heights after serving at an investment bank in Hong Kong for around four years. Like many, he prefers Beijing to Hong Kong, believing that the southern city has little of interest happening beyond money-making. The northern capital offers a more diversified lifestyle. We hope that George’s dress sense will be frequently imitated by his fellow Beijing men.
Hong Kong does have one advantage over Beijing for George. It is has more outlets offering fine menswear and accessories. George is fond of the Neapolitan silhouette and construction methods and here he wears a cotton, unlined, Borelli suit and Canali silk knit tie.
At Bulgari with Save the Children, Beijing Launch
To celebrate its 125th anniversary, Italian luxury goods maker Bulgari introduced a limited edition ring to be sold worldwide this year with all funds going to the Rewrite the Future campaign of Save the Children. Bulgari’s very enjoyable Beijing launch and fundraiser party at the Today Art Museum was attended by Stylites veteran Laura Lan, still jetting between Taibei, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Beijing but with a less gripping hair color. Laura is now the Editorial Director for Greater China at Revolution, a premier watch lifestyle magazine.
Dior F/W in Beijing
Dior released its fall collections here in Beijing today at Nanxincang. This young Hunanese lady was wearing a cute Dior dress from the current spring collection. She was determined that I must not mention her name or position.
