Beijing’s Most Stylish Restaurant Opening

The grand opening of Mesa on March First will be Beijing’s first dazzling party in the Year of the Snake (sorry Dior!). In addition to free flow wine, cocktails, beer, tapas and desserts, the event features a live jazz performance by Phillipe Mege and a charity auction with proceeds going to Free Lunch for Children. Bidding is on items donated by the Four Seasons Beijing, D-Sata, the Chair Man, and others local designers, wine distributors, and retail outlets.

Authentically Beijing?

This is the Beijing I love: welcoming, diverse, cutely bohemian, vibrant, international in its own quirky way, and, of course, smoking. Sure, you might say they are poseurs, but then, I am looking for poseurs. Maybe they are a bit pretentious – but people have been leveling the same accusation at me since I was fifteen – but I would say that they just like to keep their world a little magical. I am drinking ginger ale out of a champagne flute at the moment. Even those who constantly lose themselves in escapist fantasies need to stay sober once in a while.

These two young ladies aren’t haughty or cold, but really quite welcoming in a way. Are they authentic or are they just mimicking the way that hipstresses like them dress in other parts of the world?

The Outlook on Beijing’s Roads

I also met Beijinger Chen Jiaojiao at the Transport event. She seems unassuming and casual – quite “Beijing” – considering her position: Editor-in-Chief of The Outlook Magazine. Yes, this is that “cool, creative magazine” here in China that foreigners ask me about. The Outlook Magazine is sometimes confused with media maven Hong Huang’sIlook, though the two publications have very different Chinese names and general appearances. Both arewell-established as hip or avant-garde titles, most of which drop by the wayside after a few issues. They are alsodistinct from fashion magazinesEsquire, Cosmo, Ray Li,et al, which rarely contain surprises.

I asked Chen how she gets to her office in Sanlitun from her home in Shuangjing. She and her husband, who works as Creative Director at the same magazine, take a brown Miniman to work every day. The Miniman is apparently a slightly extended version of the Mini. They do have bikes, but these are used mainly for running errands in the neighborhood as the ride to work is both too long at 40 minutes and too dangerous and disorderly.

Of the homemade vehicles on display at the Transport exhibition, she found the makeshift tanks used by Libyan rebels most inspirational.

New Order Bassist in Beijing

I normally don’t mention music events here, but this seems particularly special. Peter Hook from New Order, among my favorite bands, will be performing here in Beijing at Tango this Saturday (9/3) at 9:00 pm. Click “more” for the details. I commented before that New Order, like the Pet Shop Boys, would be a good choice for one of those mega-fashion events here in China (but of course New Order is longer together).

Ulster in BeijingUlster外套

Wearing what one might describe as a 19th Century Ulster coat in a modern fabric, Edmund is a freelance writer based in Shenzhen. He was at “I Love XXX”, the Cosplay event that Hotspot magazine organized yesterday night. I suppose Edmund was thinking of Sherlock Holmes. Here on Tom.com are photos of less interestingly dressed, but more celebrity guests at the event.

Arctic Beijing

The frigidity of this town is keeping me off the streets, so I am not sure when I will be able to update Stylites with more street style. Please do check my frequently updated stuff-centric blog Stylitems for some of the interesting items I have seen lately.

Also, there are people feeling colder than you. Rotaract Beijing is sponsoring a clothing drive this month and there are collection spots throughout the city.

L!ve in Beijing

In Beijing for just over a month, this modelling couple – he is from Croatia and she is Canadian – were at the tennis club, wearing new items from Lacoste. On him is a polo from LACOSTE L!VE, the new youth-oriented collection that will be available in a couple months here in Beijing. This new range is more fashionable than previous Lacoste offerings, while remaining faithful to the crisp sportiness of the brand.

Galeries Lafayette Coming to Beijing

The legendary Paris department store, already a favorite of Chinese tourists, will be arriving in Beijing by 2014. They are teaming up with HK retailer I.T. It seems they’ve been thinking about this since 2007. I wonder if the major American department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Barney’s, etc. would do well here. Currently, the only department stores of their type are the Swank and Lane Crawford, both from Hong Kong.

EQ:IQ – A Touch of Dali – Paris, and Probably Beijing

The backdrop for Hong Kong brand EQ:IQ‘s F/W 2010 RTW Show held at the possibly notorious Yan Club in 798 couldn’t help but remind me of the Mae West Lips Sofa by Salvador Dali. The lip motif also appeared in the “Bisous” lip patterned tote and evening bag and in the cardinal red of the lipstick on the models.

Yet the real inspiration for the collection was the home of Creative Director Stephanie Stindel, the City of Light. While hardly a novel place from which to draw inspiration for a fashion collection, one can never really tire of fantasizing about strolls through the Jardin du Luxembourg (or shopping sprees around Place Vendôme). Girls from grayer, murkier towns ought still to mimic Les Femmes de Paris (that was the name of collection) and this appealing array of garments might be one point to start in this pursuit.

A Native Beijinger Designing Menswear

Born in Beijing’s Xicheng district, Zhang Chi is not afraid to be noticed. He went to Europe in his teens to study fashion design and is now back in Beijing with a studio in Jianwai and a menswear brand. I recently chatted with him.
