At Dashilar

Dashilar has been an important place at several points in Beijing’s history. For most of the last decade, it has been mainly a tourist mecca with few redeeming qualities beyond the historic architecture and degree of density and walkability rarely found in Chinese cities. Now, Beijing Design Week is giving the area a new chance to be a bit more interesting. The weeklong-event has two major venues, the 751 former industrial complex near the art district at 798 and the alleyways around the Western end of Dashilar. Dashilar is by far the less predictable location. Former shops, small factories, workshops and other, now often charmingly dilapidated, are being used for a wide range of installations, exhibits and pop-up shops.

Shop Girl

She runs a vintage shop on Di’anmen street with her boyfriend. Product is sourced from Japan and is sold at a relatively reasonable price compared to nearby competitors. The Gulou area has about 4 or 5 vintage shops and all of them sell items shipped in from abroad.

Since I last checked, Joy Island has become editor at Bazaar Art, a new, rather glossy and fashiony art magazine that is part of China’s largest magazine group, Trends. While being licensed by Trends, the Bazaar brand name is stronger in China than it is in its original market.欢岛现在是《芭莎艺术》的编辑。这个刊算是我见过最时尚的艺术杂志。

Joy Island

This photo and interview was in Modern Weekly a while back. Photographer Joy Island got interested in fashion while studying in London.
