Shop: BNC

I am very late to this one as the New York Times and all the major local publications all covered media mogul Hong Huang’s multi-brand boutique BNC a couple months ago. With the most Chinese independent brands of any shop in the country – over a hundred of them – BNC is currently the number one shopping destination here in Beijing for those into fashion and design. This is a rare example of a shop with very few items that can be found anywhere else.

The knit shirt and bow tie above are by Non.Season. I will post an interview with designer Zhang Di here within the next week.

Beyond all of the fashion, BNC also carries a large variety of nice design knick-knacks, many of which make great gifts. If you are looking for something distinctive from Beijing, this is the ideal destination, especially because it is located right in Sanlitun.

店铺里有很多中国设计师的东西,这件T-shirt和领结就是张迪的设计,是纯羊绒的,领结很有意思!

除了衣服,还有一些家居摆设!

Sefhyir x The HUB

Sefhyir x The HUB

In conceiving of this collaboration of limited edition scarves for the August 2014 edition of The HUB, Lio was thinking of “creative collision, explosions…Each color represent different emotion, spirit, or style….Much like all the designers joining The HUB. “This spirit of fusion and interaction between very different parties carries through perfectly to The HUB visual identity this season, a powder burst. Lio explains “it is crucial that the market for independent designers gets more structured and more designers can use an event like The HUB to meet buyers, media and others.” Lio sees this as a great opportunity for Chinese designers like herself to gain more experience in the fashion world.

The HUB has commissioned Lio to produce a limited run of this scarf that will be made available to VIPs, media and others at The HUB on the 27th and 28th August. Register here to attend The HUB. I hope to see you in HK next week.

BOYS In Fashion

After a long smog phase, the sun and clean air blessed Beijing for a week end, and with it a spring feeling, leaving behind the dredges of the winter. What a better occasion to show off early spring attires. HBA Boy KT_BNC_PEng-cheng-Hao

Xander Zhou

Xander Zhou. What comes to mind? A young, partying, larger-than-life sort of designer who gets a great deal of publicity. Fashion events and bottles of champagne. The cover photo of the October 2010 “Gay China” issue of Hong Huang’s Ilook Magazine. For me, the main memory is of that time I bumped into him on the streets of Paris.

In short, the hype around the man sometimes overshadows his fashion collections. He may be young and not too many retail points actually carry his brands, but Xander Zhou is already a big name in China fashion – especially for foreigners watching this space. Often, he is the only Mainland fashion designer that people from outside of Beijing have even heard of.

Due to scheduling conflicts, I had not actually been to one of his shows before and had only had the opportunity to see his creations hanging in BNC and on the man himself on one of the countless parties that we both attended. Given how much he seems to be out and the time he must take being interviewed by fashion magazines, I was not sure how he ever had time to design.

We will have more on his show last night later this week.

The World of Triple-Major

It’s a funky world that is growing fast. After less than a year of being open, Triple-Major is rapidly challenging and reinventing fashion standards. The concept store’s own brand has now reached Paris Fashion Week and the iconic punctuation mark necklaces are becoming a must-have around Beijing. Stylites’ Suzy recently sat down with creator Ritchie Chan to discuss recent developments for his shop and brand and also what he has noticed about consumers in Beijing.

LifeStyle Photoshoot《品味生活》大片儿

I felt so bad that Stylites had not yet mentioned BNC, that we did a whole photo shoot for LifeStyle Magazine just using brands from the foremost multi-brand boutique in Beijing focused exclusively on local brands. Editor Eric Gao took the lead on this and the results can be seen in the February issue the magazine. For those who don’t know, LifeStyle is the bilingual publication that I edit.

Galeries Lafayette Coming to Beijing

The legendary Paris department store, already a favorite of Chinese tourists, will be arriving in Beijing by 2014. They are teaming up with HK retailer I.T. It seems they’ve been thinking about this since 2007. I wonder if the major American department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Barney’s, etc. would do well here. Currently, the only department stores of their type are the Swank and Lane Crawford, both from Hong Kong.
