A Critic

Jel, from X+Q Sculpture Studio, had some interesting things to say about my blog, which I will translate when I have a chance. To summarize: While professing that she doesn’t really understand fashion, she says that the people appearing on stylites are all rather mainstream and bound to meet with the approval of the fashion crowd. Also she thats from the perspective of the Chinese, “fashion” really is something from the West, so my selections make a lot of sense.

季震红对我的网站有些有意思的想法:

“我对时尚不是很在行,纯粹是仗着身高撑个场面,乱穿一通让你见笑了。

Recent Photo Shoots

One doesn’t normally think of general managers of hotels as particular exemplars of cool, but in my job I run across quite a few of them, I decided to a do a shoot for my magazine of the small bunch that actually have a bit of flare. This shoot for LifeStyle by Teresa Yeh, a long-term collaborator, included, among others, Joe Ho and Francois Vanvi. Jeffrey Ying, an important business associate of Stylites, has also been busy recently.

An Aura of Éclat

I always wish for managers of hotels, bars, and restaurants to have a certain glamour and something approaching a distinct personal style. Joe Ho and Francois Vanvi (above) are the only two hotel general managers I have encountered here in Beijing who look a bit like the hotel GM of my dreams. Francois was born in Paris and grew up there and in Hong Kong. He has been in Beijing for several years and is about to take over the opening of a new boutique property, the Hotel Éclat Beijing, in that new triangular structure called ParkView Green. Recently, I asked Francois a few questions about style and being a GM.

Francois Vanvi原来在北京千禧酒店,马上就要当新开的北京侨福芳草地里面的Éclat精品酒店的总经理。Francois是法国跟中国的混血,在巴黎出生长大但在香港生活了很长时间。他在北京有五年了。

To Dubai

Sad to leave London, just for fun and to see if it as fantastic as is purported, I am heading to Dubai tomorrow for the first time. Apparently, there is not much walking on streets there, so local styles are probably only visible in the malls and high-end hotels. It will be nice to visit the tallest building in the world. I will be back in Beijing next Monday.
